The Silent Struggle: Navigating Executive Functioning as an African American Woman

Resilient sisters, in a world that often demands we wear capes of invincibility, the journey of an African-American woman is layered with silent battles. We've been the backbone of communities, the torchbearers of traditions, and the silent warriors in boardrooms. Yet, why does a shadow of hesitation loom when it comes to our personal aspirations?

The Weight of Legacy and Expectation

Our history is rich with tales of formidable women who gracefully shouldered immense burdens. But with that legacy comes an unspoken expectation: to always be strong, persevere, and never falter. This weight can sometimes stifle our executive functioning, the very cognitive process that should help us plan, initiate, and complete tasks.

It's not a reflection of our intelligence or our capability. It echoes centuries of conditioning, always putting others first and masking our vulnerabilities.

The Paradox of Appearance vs. Reality

In professional arenas, we've mastered the art of 'showing up,' even when we're internally fragmented. The world sees our achievements but not the sleepless nights, the mental debates, and the self-doubt that often accompanies our decisions. This constant overdrive to maintain appearances can be mentally exhausting, leading to paralysis when it comes to personal projects. We often get stuck in the "capability" aspect, the creative feedback loop in our imagination of "will do," "should do," and "gonna do," giving us fraudulent dopamine shots of success of an incomplete task.

Embracing Vulnerability: Steps to Reclaim Our Dreams

  1. Acknowledge the Struggle: It's okay to admit that we're overwhelmed. Recognizing the glitch is the first step to addressing it.

  2. Create Sanctuaries: Our environment plays a pivotal role. Design spaces that breathe peace, order, and inspiration. Let your surroundings be a reflection of the world you want to create.

  3. The Healing Power of Music: Lo-fi, gospel, jazz - let the rhythms guide your thoughts, offering solace and focus.

  4. Nourish to Flourish: Our ancestors knew the power of the earth. Incorporate foods rich in omega-3s and antioxidants. Let's heal from within.

  5. Mindful Moments: Embrace practices like meditation and deep breathing. They're not just trends; they're anchors in our chaotic world.

  6. Break Tasks, Not Spirits: Divide tasks into manageable chunks. Celebrate each small victory; they lead to bigger triumphs.

  7. Lean on Your Sisterhood: Share your aspirations. Our community's strength has always been in its unity. Let's lift each other up.

A Heartfelt Plea

To my sisters, I see you. Behind the poised exteriors, I see the dreams, the hesitations, the silent struggles. Let's embrace our vulnerabilities, override our hesitations, and reclaim our lives because we don't just owe it to ourselves but to the generations that will follow.
